Recently my sisters 2008 528i doesn’t want to run anymore. When its cold it would start up then die then restart and runs good, restarts fine when engine is warm. Now it just turns over kinda runs then dies and now just turns over. Says theres 9 miles left for an empty tank ( always ran the car low on gas). Theres also an engine light and warning of reduced engine power. Everything else works, just the engine wont continue to run.

Im thinking the gas pump is dead, I’ll check it tomorrow and bring some gas, some tools, check spark, injectors, and my OBDII tester.

Any other issues is could be? Seems to been started when the weather got cold recently.

VANOS valve solenoids? Camshaft sensor?

Reading the code would be the best place to start.

Fuel filter comes to mind. You aren’t really supposed to run a car near empty all the time, empty gas tank collects condensation, with ethanol in gas that collects and separates it into water which can cause corrosion. Lots of corrosion can clog fuel filters, kill fuel pumps, jam injectors etc etc.

Dead fuel pump is a good place to start. make sure the car hasn’t run for a few hours, then sit in the car with the radio and HVAC fan off and turn the key to the on position(but don’t start it). You should hear the fuel pump whirr for ~15 seconds. It’s not really loud, so it’s important to make the car quiet. If you do hear it, it’s good, move on to something else. If you don’t hear it spin, leave the key in the on position and pull up the back seat(it’s not hard, just grab the front edge and pull up sharply, it’s just held in with some clips), once you have the seat out of the way you’ll see a hatch with 4-5 bolts, remove bolts and hatch and you should be looking at the top of the fuel pump. Give it a whack with a wrench, not hard enough to bend/break anything, what you are trying to do is dislodge a potentially stuck internal component. If you hear it whirr to life, its the pump. If it doesn’t it could still be the pump, but it might be very dead.

And tell her to stop running it perpetually empty. The pump relies on the fuel around it to cool itself. When it’s run perpetually empty it overheats regularly which causes premature deaths. I’ve heard of people with e46's kill a pump in under 20k by doing this.

also, it could be an idle control valve or the oil/air separator could be clogged.

You can either jump the fuel injection relay or there should be an empty spot on one of the fuse blocks that you can jumper to run the fuel pump. I don’t have an e60 bentley, and the forums aren’t as helpful as the older models. But that is how it is done on my e30 and e39.

Ill check with my BMW buddy but sounds like a dead fuel pump (more likely) or fuel pressure regulator which is normally on/around the pump for BMW. Runs fine when warm but wont start when cold. Reduced engine power is probably be due to low fuel pressure and the computer retarding the timing but could be something else.

The VANOS solenoids could be leaking can also cause it not to run when cold, but now it wont run at all.

Buddy says maybe valvetronic but he said read the codes. It could be valves not opening enough

valvetronic as in the variable valvetiming solenoids aka VANOS?

edit: valvetronic is another whole part... great. I see why I dont want a BMW :)

Yeah I would agree but I bought a 540i 2 yards ago. Though it does help to have a buddy who is BMW mechanics.

Also that’s what I originally thought but this is a good video that explains it
